PSD Standards for World Languages

 

Standard 1: Communication                            draft 4- (6/28/06)

 

Students communicate in languages other than English through listening, speaking reading and writing in various cultural contexts.

 

1.1 Interpersonal communication - Students listen and respond, engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings, emotions and preferences, and exchange opinions.

           

Novice: (by the end of level 2)

1.1. N1   Use level-appropriate vocabulary and structures to engage in comprehensible oral and written exchanges,

   both spontaneous and prepared.

1.1. N2  Comprehend and communicate level-appropriate vocabulary and structures.

1.1. N3   Recognize and reproduce gestures, paraphrasing and circumlocution to share and acquire information.

Intermediate: (by the end of level 5)

1.1. I1   Use level-appropriate vocabulary and structures to engage in comprehensible oral and written exchanges,

both spontaneous and prepared.

1.1. I2  Comprehend and communicate using a range of vocabulary and structures in both familiar and new situations.

1.1. I3   Recognize and use gestures, paraphrasing and circumlocution to share and acquire information.

Advanced (pre): (by the end of a future k-12 program)

1.1. A1   Apply level-appropriate vocabulary and structures to engage in comprehensible oral and written exchanges,

1.2 Interpretive communication - Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics when listening, writing, and viewing.

1.2. N1   Demonstrate an understanding of simple spoken and written language through a variety of media, including

 authentic materials.

1.2. N2   Identify main ideas and key words when reading, listening and viewing.

1.2. N3   Acquire meaning through the recognition of structural patterns.

1.2. I1   Demonstrate an understanding of spoken and written language through a variety of media and authentic

materials that include new topics.

1.2. I2    Identify main ideas and supporting details when reading, listening and viewing.

1.2. I3   Acquire meaning through the recognition of increasingly complex structural patterns and word families.

1.2. I4    Research and interpret information from a variety of sources.

1.2.A1  Comprehend spoken and written language through a variety of media and authentic materials including new

1.3 Presentational communication - Students present information, concepts, and ideas to listeners or readers on a variety of topics.

 patterns.

Intermediate: (by the end of level 5)

1.3. I1    Formulate comprehensible oral and written presentations using a range of familiar vocabulary and structural

patterns, as well as original language.

1.3. I2    Summarize and draw conclusions from authentic materials.

1.3. I3    Present information on researched issues.

Standard 2: Cultures

 

Students gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures.

 

2.1 Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the cultures studied.

 

Novice: (by the end of level 2)

2.1. N1   Develop an awareness of the perspectives and practices of the cultures studied.

2.1. N2   Recognize how the perspectives of the cultures are reflected in their practices. 

Intermediate: (by the end of level 5)

2.1.I1    Demonstrate an awareness of the perspectives and practices of the cultures studied.

2.1.I2    Examine how the perspectives of the cultures are reflected in their practices. 

Advanced (pre): (by the end of a future k-12 program)

2.1.A1  Demonstrate a deep awareness of the perspectives and practices of the cultures studied.

2.1.A2  Analyze how the perspectives of the cultures are reflected in their practices. 

 

 

2.2 Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between products and perspectives of the cultures studied.

Standard 3: Connections

 

Students connect with other disciplines and acquire information.

 

3.1 Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the target language.

3.1. N1   Locate and identify target language resources about other disciplines.

3.1. N2   Use level-appropriate language to obtain and report on topics that reinforce knowledge of other content areas.

Intermediate: (by the end of level 5)

3.1.I1     Locate and analyze target language resources about other disciplines.

3.1.I2     Use level-appropriate language to discuss topics that reinforce knowledge of other content areas.

3.1.A1    Locate and synthesize target language resources about other disciplines.

3.2 Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are available through the target language and its cultures.

Standard 4: Comparisons

 

Students develop insight into language and culture.

 

4.1 Students demonstrate understanding of language through comparisons of the language studied and their own.

           

Novice: (by the end of level 2)

4.1. N1   Identify and use the patterns of the target language and compare them to the student’s native language.

4.1. N2  Demonstrate an understanding of the student’s native language through the study of the target language.

Intermediate: (by the end of level 5)

4.1.I1     Apply more complex patterns of the target language and compare them to the student’s native language.

4.1.I2     Continue to develop an understanding of the student’s native language through the study and analysis of the

target language.

Advanced (pre): (by the end of a future k-12 program)

4.1.A1    Use knowledge of patterns in both the target language and the student’s own language to communicate

effectively.

4.1.A2    Expand understanding of the student’s native language through the study and analysis of increasingly

complex elements of the target language.

 

4.2 Students demonstrate understanding of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own.

4.2. N1   Identify the similarities and differences between the target cultures and the student’s culture.

4.2. N2   Identify the contributions of the target cultures to the student’s culture, and vice versa.

Intermediate: (by the end of level 5)

4.2.I1    Investigate the similarities and differences between the target cultures and the student’s culture.

4.2.I2    Identify and interpret the contributions of the target cultures to the student’s culture, and vice versa.

4.2.A1    Analyze the significance of the similarities and differences between the target cultures and the student’s

culture.

4.2.A2    Analyze the impact of the contributions of the target cultures on the student’s culture, and vice versa.

 

Standard 5: Communities

 

Students participate in multilingual communities within a variety of contexts at home and around the world.

 

5.1 Students use the language for personal enjoyment and enrichment, both within and beyond the school setting.

5.1. N1  Identify and participate in situations that use the skills and cultures of the target language beyond the

classroom setting.

5.1. N2   Identify and use resources that provide information about the cultures studied. 

Intermediate: (by the end of level 5)

5.1.I1    Develop and use the skills and cultural knowledge of the target language beyond the classroom setting.

5.1.I2    Locate and use resources that provide information about the cultures studied.

5.1.A1    Expand and apply the skills and cultural knowledge of the target language beyond the classroom setting.
