Asian Adventure

On Wednesday third grade classes traveled from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Beijing, China to begin our study of Asia. Students will be learning about the countries of China, Japan, and India. Your child received an outline for this unit of study on Thursday. At the bottom of this overview there are some great web sites for you to visit together. A special activity that will be included in our study of Asia is a Japanese Tea Ceremony. We will be making origami bowls and kimonos for the celebration. Please send in a big white or light colored T-shirt that your child can use to make a kimono. Used T-shirts work great! We will need these by November 1.

Mystery Book Talks

The date is quickly approaching for the fall mystery book talk. A schedule for books talks and a reminder of the requirements to be completed are attached to this newsletter. Remember, time spent working on the book talks can be counted toward your child’s monthly reading minutes.

Math

Next week we will begin a new unit in math. In this unit the students will be learning more about linear measurement including both customary and metric systems. Lessons will include calculating perimeter, area, and the relationship of circumference to diameter. If you would like a copy of the parent letter for this unit, please jot a note in your child’s homework folder and I will send it home with your child next week.

Guest Reader

The students did an outstanding job of coming prepared to read their favorite books to their guest reader groups this quarter. Thanks for helping your child practice their passages each week. I will be listening to your students read during Accelerated Reading time for the remainder of the year. Guest Reader time will end on October 22. We will begin sharing our written stories with our peers. Author’s Share will take the place of Guest Reader. Stories read during this time can be written at school or at home.

Our Classroom Web site

Our classroom web site is up and running. I would like to include student work and/or pictures from our classroom activities. I will only use your child’s first name to label work or pictures. If you are uncomfortable with this procedure, please write me a note. Our web site address is: http://staffweb.psdschools.org/cdelmont/ //staffweb.psdschools.org/
