Introduction to the t-score |
William S. Gosset developed the idea of the t-score when working in Guinness brewery in 1899. Gosset had a problem when using the z-score because he rarely knew what value his population standard deviation was. He also noticed that the samples he was collecting at the brewery were relatively small and this developed problems when using his statistics. The new t-test he developed helped him to establish the best barley variety for the different types of beer being brewed. Gosset's statistical work helped him to become the head brewer, definitely a bit more exciting than professor of statistics.
We still use this distribution today to help us make inferences about a population mean. |
