Introduction to
linear regression
|
In 1795 Carl Friedrich Gauss discovered the binomial theorem. The normality of the binomial distribution only gave hints of his later contributions to the statistics field. While trying to account for the variation in individual observations of stellar locations, Gauss predicted the position of a newly discovered asteroid. The least squares approximation method was used to help him distinguish the location. It wasn't until 1805 that the least-squares approximation method was published. This contribution to statistics has proven to be very beneficial when making predictions.
