Math:
The math curriculum which is used at TCKS is Harcourt (This curriculum is closely aligned with the NCTM Standards.) Math in first grade includes several mathematical components including, mental math, problem solving, number sense, place value, counting, time, and money skills.
There are six units in this program:
Unit 1 - Addition and Subtraction Concepts
Unit 2 - Addition and subtraction Facts to 10
Unit 3 - Graphs, Numbers to 100 and Facts to 12
Unit 4 - Geometry and Addition and Subtraction to 20
Unit 5 - Money, Time, and Fractions
Unit 6 - Measurement, Operations, and Data
(We generally go through a unit a week.)
I will teach math using a variety of manipulatives, graphs, games, hands on activities, and worksheet practice. I will be utilizing both small and large group teaching. Small groups will be created as needed for work on specific skills. At home, you and your child can work on addition and subtraction facts to 18, telling time to the hour and half hour, counting by 10’s, 5’s, and 2’s, and counting money. Your child will occasionally bring math homework to be done and returned the next day. Many times this is to be completed with parent support.
