Essay deadlines are FIRM – No excuses. Late papers will be accepted only under extraordinary
circumstances and REQUIRE a phone call from parent or guardian. Students MUST
be prepared for computer crashes and supply needs (e.g., ink cartridges).
KINKOS IS OPEN 24 HOURS. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A COMPUTER AT HOME, you must adjust
your own schedule to permit time to work at school.
-- Missed workshops AUTOMATICALLY deduct 10% from the grade. NO excuses.
Absence from class does NOT excuse workshops. You should arrange to have paper
delivered to class OR have parent/guardian call me. PAPERS MUST BE READY AT THE
BEGINNING OF CLASS FOR WORKSHOP. BRING TWO COPIES OF PAPER TO EACH WORKSHOP.
Workshops can be excused IF you email me the paper by 6 a.m. AND call me to let
me know the paper has been emailed. You must then on your own workshop three
papers from other students in the class.
-- You must keep a backup of all essays at all times. We will occasionally
revisit assignments and you MUST be able to retrieve it for revision. In
addition, backups help both you and me in the event of lost papers.
-- All papers will be kept by the student until the end of the semester for
possible final revisions. You must turn in the original graded paper with any
revision.
-- Two Essays may be revised during weeks 10-14 of the semester. Missed

Basic Paper Format (FROM OWL
WRITING CENTER)
The preparation
of manuscripts in MLA style is covered in chapter four of the MLA Style Manual,
as well as in chapter three of the Handbook for Writing Research Papers. Here
are some basic guidelines for formatting a paper in MLA style.
General
Guidelines
- Type your paper or write it on a computer and print it out on standard-sized
paper (8.5 X 11 inches).
- Double-space your paper.
- Set the margins of your document to 1 inch on all sides.
- Create a header that numbers all pages consecutively in the upper
right-hand corner, one-half inch from the top and flush with the right
margin.
- Use either underlining or italics throughout your essay for highlighting the
titles of longer works (books, movies, magazines, newspapers) and providing
emphasis. Use quotation marks for shorter works such as poems and essays.
Formatting the first page of your paper
- Do not make a title page for your paper unless specifically requested.
- Provide a double-spaced entry in the top left corner of the first page that
lists your name, your instructor's name, the course, and the date.
- Center your title on the line below the header with your name, and begin your
paper immediately below the title.
