Becoming Word Savvy

THIS IS AN HONORS COURSE. Advanced Grammar & Vocabulary (AGV) (formerly College Board Prep), requires you to develop good study habits and the discipline to work outside of class to learn vocabulary and practice strategies to improve your critical reading and writing skills. We will spend time during class reviewing vocabulary words and deepening our understanding of word meaning (semantics), function, and structure (form); however, it is up to you to devote time each night to studying for this class. Last minute memorizing will not help you in the long run. Homework is designed to prepare you for unit quizzes, tests, and, most importantly, the SAT and ACT college entrance exams, so, please, take it seriously.

· Vocabulary Workshop Level G by Jerome Shostak (MUST BE PURCHASED)
· Writing for Standardized Tests (MUST BE PURCHASED)

· Word Nerd Notebook (consider a notebook that has multiple sections)
· FCHS computer login and email account

Suggested Supplementary Materials
· College-level dictionary such as Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11th edition
· College-level thesaurus such as Roget’s II The New Thesaurus or Random House Roget’s Thesaurus
· SAT and/or ACT test prep booklets (SAT: purchase a new version which includes practice writing tests)
