As
students grow in their academic career, it is important that they
begin to take the lead in talking with teachers about problems
and concerns, whether it is to receive additional help on an assignment
or to discuss a grade. Therefore, I encourage your student to talk with
me outside of class, and I am available to offer additional help on
assignments. I will deal with
your student directly in order to improve his/her performance in class
before
I
contact you.
This
is
not meant
to circumvent you as the parent, but to help our students take responsibility
for their own
education. When serious issues do arise, rest assured I will contact
you for advice and help. If you ever have a question or concern please
do not hesitate to contact me via email or phone.
Class calendars and assignments Each of my classes has a weekly calendar detailing assignments and due dates. The calendar is posted prior to the upcoming week so students always know what is ahead. Please check these calendars if you are interested in what we are doing in class.
Grades and attendance Parent Internet Viewer (PIV) will give you access to your student's grades and daily attendance. My class attendance/tardy policy is posted online. It is important that your student attends class in order to not only keep up with the workload but also to engage in the class discussion. Many of my classes have participation points awarded based on classroom discussions and attendance (only unexcused absences and tardies are factors). If your student needs to miss class, please have him/her talk with me about the missed work; I will not chase down your student when he/she returns. It is the student's responsibility to make up all work missed in a timely fashion.
Classroom behavior -- cell phones, iPods, etc. My class policies are posted online and students are expected to adhere to homework policies, attendance/tardy policies, etc. Additionally, students are expected to be responsible in the classroom and computer labs. Students who use cell phones or iPods in the classroom will have them confiscated and will have to pick them from an administrator at the end of the day. I will also write the student up for disciplinary action as these are disruptions not only for me but for the other students. When we are working individually in class, then students may use iPods. Academic integrity Maintaining academic integrity is your student's responsibility. Copying another student's work or plagiarizing papers will result in a failing grade for that assignment, and could result in a failing grade for the course and/or disciplinary action from FCHS. In order to help prevent plagiarism, and to provide students with feedback on their writing, my classes use SafeAssignmentfor all formal essay assignments.
