Pre-AP Biology Current Events Current events are a way for you to see how science relates to everyday life, the world, and you! They are worth 35 points each and considered a major assignment. One current event is due at least once a month. Due dates are below. Directions: Neatly cut out the current event from a magazine or website (no photocopies), relating to science and staple it to your critique. If you get an article off the web you must make sure the reference is sited from a reputable source. Online sources are limited to the following sites: CNN (www.cnn.com), Science News (sciencenews.org), Discover (www.discover.com) and National Georgraphic (www.nationalgeographic.com). If an online resource is used, you must print out a copy of the article. The article must have at least 10 paragraphs. Answer the following questions in complete sentences, preferably typed and highlight the important facts in the article. See SAMPLE ARTICLE ATTACHED! In 4-5 sentences briefly describe the main idea as reported in the article, make sure to address the main question(s) in the article. Write a hypothesis and prediction with an If/Then statement based on the article’s main idea(s). For Example: Hypothesis: West Nile Virus will spread throughout the United States. Prediction: If mosquito control is not taken care of then the West Nile virus will spread rapidly. Use a paragraph (at least 4-5 sentences) to explain how you would test your hypothesis/prediction. Example: I would use mosquito control in Larimer County and not in Weld County and document number of West Nile cases in each county. The type of control would be limited to one pesticide to limit the variables. The pesticide used would be statistically proven to be the most beneficial against mosquito’s. Comment on your opinion of the conclusions (at least 5-6 sentences). Do you agree or disagree? Why? Were the conclusions surprising? Why? Confusing? Do the conclusions suggest that further work in the area be beneficial and explain why or why not? Explain how the conclusions affect us in today’s world. (5-6 sentences)? Which branch of science does the article relate to? Define the branch of Science.
