Outline: This will be the second clay experience for kindergarten students. The previous experience allowed students to "mess" with the clay and experiment with various textures. In this project students will learn to wedge clay and make a simple pinch pot. Finished pots will be decorated with repeated patterns in the form of surface texture and paint.

Materials: Red Rock Red clay - tennis ball size ball for each student;Various objects for creating texture; Watercolor paint; White tempera paint; Small paintbrushes; Clay canvases

Procedures: Demonstrate and explain wedging. Demonstrate and explain making a pinch pot beginning with forming clay into a ball. Push thumb into ball and pinch the sides to form a pot. Emphasize the importance of creating a uniform thickness around the sides and on the bottom of the pinch pot. Finish by decorating the surface with a variety of textured repeated pattern. Let dry and bisque fire. Use watercolor to help reinforce the pattern on the pinch pot surface. Demonstrate how to add additional repeated patterns with paint. White tempera adds interest when used for fine details.

Standards addressed:

Perception: Students use a combination of lines, shapes, and textures to create patterns on the surface of their pinch pot.

Application/Creation: Students learn rudimentary techniques for hand-building with clay. They better understand the limitations of the materials and how the material reacts to physical pressures.
