Mission:
To learn the fundamentals and finer points of writing, filming and editing
for TV, and to use that knowledge in service to Rocky in three ways:
1. Weekly Broadcasts--we will design, create, produce and
broadcast a weekly program that showcases the best that Rocky's students
and staff have to offer, while striving to provide a balance of useful information
and appropriate entertainment.
2. School Club/Activity Promotion Project--we will each identify
a club or activity at Rocky, and contract with that organization to produce
a promotional video for them according to their specifications.
3. Colorado High School Video Awards Contest--we will promote
and administer this year's contest. Three years ago, we designed and launched
this contest to recognize and celebrate the work and creativity of video
students from all over Colorado. It is getting larger every year and becoming
widely recognized, even by colleges and universities with film and video
programs.
This class is:
- a chance to learn about TV and video through your own active experience
rather than the typical classroom format.
- a chance to discover and share with Rocky and the community the positive
things that happen here.
- an exercise in team work. You will be working closely with the other members
of the class to create a product that we all can be proud of.
- a chance to push yourself creatively and technically--to set high goals
for yourself and take satisfaction in achieving them.
- an opportunity to think about an important form of communication that
touches more people every day than any other form, and to refine your ability
to communicate in all forms.
- a survey of the fundamental elements of an industry and medium that is
global in its influence and cutting-edge in its technology--we will be using
the latest advancements in digital filming, editing and DVD creation.
- an opportunity to learn skills that can earn you money right now, or enable
you to make sound decisions about pursuing further education for a career
in the field.
This class is NOT:
- a blow-off class. You will be given high expectations for writing, filming,
editing and learning, and you will be held accountable for achieving those
high expectations.
- a chance to mess around for ninety minutes in other parts of the building.
Times will arise when you will need to leave the room during class to work
on a project. You will EARN the right to leave the room by demonstrating
to me that you have the RESPONSIBILITY to handle it, and you will be held
accountable for your behavior at all times.
- a forum for you to appeal to your own circle of friends at the expense
or exclusion of the greater audience. This class is driven by a universal
audience, not an isolated one.
- required. Think of this class as a Public Relations department for Rocky,
just like you would find at Hewlett Packard or Kodak or any other large
corporation. If you are unable to carry yourself PROFESSIONALLY in every
way, you CAN be fired.
