The Air Up There

A WebQuest For Discovering Some Things About One of Our Most Serious

And Global Atmospheric Problems

By Ron Jensen, Science Teacher, Ft. Collins High School, Ft. Collins, Colorado

Introduction

It has been said that before the advent of large-scale agriculture and the industrial age, people could see the brighter stars and planets during the day. We can no longer see them through our polluted, blue (?) skies.

Materials that pollute our atmosphere come from many sources, both natural and man-made. Many of them have a significant impact on our environment and our society. Environmental chemistry can help to explain where the pollutants originate, how they affect the environment and may suggest some potential solutions. However, simply knowing how to solve the problem is often not enough. Societal, cultural, ethical and international considerations must be taken into account as well. When ecology meets economy, there are bound to be difficulties that are not easily overcome.
