As of 2000-2001, there are three general kinds of computers in use at Tavelli: Macs, PowerMacs/iMacs, and PC's (also known as IBM-compatibles). As stated before, this manual deals primarily with Macs and PowerMacs that run system 7.0 or higher. Macs such as LC 520's and more recent models easily meet this criteria. (To see which system your Mac runs, go to finder and choose "About this Macintosh" or "About this computer" under the colored apple (apple menu).
The Mac hard drives at Tavelli are not all the same; however, there are a few things that should be on almost every machine. If you ever feel that you are "missing" some software, learn of an application you would like to have, or read about an application in this manual that is not on your machine, please contact Mr. Durkin. As always, please contact Mr. Durkin if you have any questions regarding software applications that are or are not mentioned here.
This folder on your hard drive should contain some basic software to use. The most general program available in this folder is ClarisWorks 4.0. If your machine does not have this software and you would like to have it, please contact Mr. Durkin.
ClarisWorks contains word processing, spreadsheet, database, drawing, and painting programs. The PSD continually offers excellent and thorough classes on this and other similar programs. Please review the current PSD Staff Development Catalog for classes that are being offered. The following few pages comprise an overview of the various aspects of ClarisWorks 4.0. Of course, the ClarisWorks program also contains a complete on-line manual. Following the overview, there are some other sections related to ClarisWorks. (Please contact Mr. Durkin for assistance with ClarisWorks 5.0 or AppleWorks files.)

To change a font size, style, type or placement:
Adding Graphics from the Claris Library
Footers and headers are useful because they appear on every page of a document without having to type them each time.
Adding a Footer
Go to Format and select Insert Footer.
Type what you want to appear in the footer. If you want the pages to be numbered in your footer, go to Edit and select Insert Page # It will automatically number each consecutive page. The default format for Footers creates italic and centered text. If desired, the format can be changed.
Adding a Header
Go to Format and select Insert Header.
Type what you want to appear at the top of each page.
Deleting a header or footer
Go to Format and select Remove Header or Remove Footer.

It is a good idea to "view" a ClarisWorks document before printing it. The next four sections: Slide Show, Resizing View, Invisible Text, and Spell Checking can help you decide if your document is ready to print.
The Slide Show option is located under the View Menu. This option may be used to display each page as it would appear when printed. This option is also very handy for a simple way to use successive pages in ClarisWorks as a visual aid in presentations. Once in Slide Show, many options are available. The Start button is used to begin the Slide Show presentation. To return to the Slide Show options window, simply press the "q" key. Click the Done button to return to normal view.
The "100" at the bottom left of the screen in ClarisWorks may be used to enlarge or reduce the view of a document. One simple way to view your page prior to printing is to reduce the image to 50%. The resizing feature is also very helpful in creating work. If you never have used this feature before, I highly recommend giving it a try. It allows you to see and work on the entire page at once or zoom in to do artwork up to the pixel level. The smaller and larger "mountains" to the right of the "100" also may be used to enlarge or reduce the view of an image.
Hidden text is known as Invisible Text in ClarisWorks. Paragraph markers, tabs, and spaces are examples of hidden text. Often times, it is a good idea to view your word processing documents with the hidden text visible. To do this, go to the Edit Menu and select Preferences . . . Once in the Preferences window, check the Show Invisibles box.
Spelling Checking is a vital, yet far from foolproof, writing tool. The Spell Checker in ClarisWorks is found in Writing Tools in the Edit Menu. The keyoboard equivelent is Command and equals (=) key.
Though ClarisWorks comes with an assistant to help create documents, many students at Tavelli create and use a personalized "blank page" for new word processing documents. These documents act as a student's personal stationery. For instance, a student's "blank page" could have a footer that contains such things as first and last name, current date, page number and homeroom teacher's name.
For example:
Definitive ClarisWorks / AppleWorks Site
ClarisWorks Tutuorials - A must visit site by Cindy O'Hora contains all the information and links to other sites you'll ever need to stay up-to-date with ClarisWorks and AppleWorks such as ClarisWorks Users Group and Apple's Tech Exchange for ClarisWorks and AppleWorks Tips and Techniques.
SimpleText is the most basic of all word processors. Students at Tavelli sometimes use this program to hardcode HTML documents.
There are many different software programs on the various Macs at Tavelli. Please contact me for more information regarding specific applications.
The following are some of the items that should be in the Internet folder on your hard drive. Detailed information regarding these items may be found in the PSD-Net section of this document.
Simeon is the district standard for reading e-mail on alpha (PSD-Net).
This communications program can be used to access alpha or venus accounts. It can also be used to access other computers around the world. Icons for alpha and venus should be found inside the Telnet folder. More information on telnet.
Another icon that should be present is one for the Fort Collins Public Library. Activating the FCPL icon will connect you to the library's database. Use "library" as the login name and "vt100" as the terminal setting.
Netscape is the standard web browser for Macs in PSD.
There are many programs that can be used with non-text items found on the web. GraphicConverter, QuickGIF, Sound Machine, QuickTime and MoviePlayer are just a few. Students at Tavelli use items in this folder to help them design web sites. For information on how to use a specific program, please contact Mr. Durkin
This is a file transfer program. This program is used by Tavelli students to transfer their World-Wide-Web (WWW)-related files between their server space at Tavelli and their alpha accounts at the SSC.
This is a "catch-all" folder that allows for easy saving on the hard drive even when BDW Protector (a security program on older Macs) is at a low level. This folder shouldn't be used much by most students at Tavelli since sever space is allotted to them. A Documents folder may also serve a similar function to that of a Guest folder. Macs in the classroom generally allow any user to save in such a folder. However, the computers in the labs do not typically allow saves to the hard drive. Students and others MUST save work on the server.
If you have any questions regarding other areas or items of your hard drive, please contact me for more information. If you have any suggestions for other aspects of the hard drive or software in general, please contact Mr. Durkin.
As described earlier in the Macintosh Basics section, aliases under the apple menu are a great shortcut to applications. For example, an alias for Simeon should already be under your apple menu. If not, please contact me. Many staff members place aliases under the apple menu for frequently used items such as ClarisWorks, Netscape, Fetch, SimpleText, Venus, and others. If you need help in setting aliases under the Apple menu for the first time, please contact Mr. Durkin. (Note: Any security program present must be raised from Guest level in order to create new aliases.) Apple menu aliases are described in the Macintosh Basics section of this manual. Tip: Placing one or more space characters in the front of the name of an alias moves it to the top of the list for even easier access.
File sharing is an important feature of any networked Mac. If you haven't already, you may want to visit the overview of File Sharing in Macintosh Basics.
As the word "server" implies, this computer is devoted, in part, to sharing or "serving up" applications and files. The Tavelli Server contains shared applications. It also contains personal file storage space for staff and students. The Tavelli server also shares the contents of two CD's. All material stored on the Tavelli server is automatically backed-up on tape weekly. The Tavelli Server is a computer and CD tower that is in the media office. The Tavelli Server has three main shared parts: The Server, HyperStudio CD, and World Book CD. These files are available from any networked Mac in the building.
Typically, the Tavelli server is accessed through an alias file at the root level of the hard drive of any networked Mac on campus. This alias file is named "Server alias" and its icon is Hobbes the Tiger. Information on how to log on to the Tavelli server is presented after a brief description of the different parts of the file server.
The Four Folders of the Tavelli Server
The Tavelli server is divided into four folders: Applications, Student Work, Staff, and Tiger Tech
There are many software programs in the Applications folder on the server. The keyboarding program All the Right Type, various math programs, and several geography games are just a few of the items that may be found on the server.
This folder on the server contains personal storage space for Tavelli students. Every 1st- through 6th-grader has a private folder. Folders are arranged by student last names. Generally, students do not have access to any student folder other than her or his own. However, some students maintain public folders. All staff members have full access to all student folders and contents.
This folder on the server contains personal server storage space for Tavelli staff members. Each staff member has a personal folder listed by last name. Inside each staff folder is a Public, Private, and Drop Folder. Complete instructions on the Staff folder appear later in this document.
At the top of the Staff folder is the latest on-line HyperCard stack of the DMC Catalog.
This folder contains special files created for Tavelli staff and students. There is a folder of templates for easy web page design. There are also manuals for various software. For example, the full text of the Simeon E-mail Manual is stored in this folder. Among others, there is a graphics folder for work on web sites and other projects.
World Book Encyclopedia and HyperStudio CD's are shared on the Tavelli network. To access these items, use their aliases on the HARD DRIVE of the individual computer workstation. These aliases can be found in the Applications folder of the hard drive.
To access the World Book CD, activate the World Book alias icon in the Applications folder on the hard drive. Once the CD icon appears on the desktop, activate the World Book icon in the Applications folder on the hard drive.
The HyperStudio CD is accessed in a similar fashion. AppleScript files could be used to eliminate a step or two, but it seems that students have a handle on this process.
Please note: If one plans to make use of a shared CD AND personal server space during the same session, it is necessary to log on to the server with a valid user name and password FIRST, then access the CD's you may need.
Logging On to the Tavelli Server
The easiest and preferred way to log on to the Tavelli server is to activate the Tavelli server alias icon on the hard drive of any networked Mac and login with a personal name and password. Students are trained in this method.
Student PSD identification numbers are used as login names. Initially, student passwords are set to the numerical month and day of birth. A notebook of student identification numbers is in each lab.
Staff members have personal login names as well. Any staff member needing assistance should contact Mr. Durkin.
Once the server alias icon is activated, the user is prompted to enter a name and password.
If necessary, remove whatever defaults in the login name field and replace it with the desired login name.
Login name: student id #
Password: private
In addition to general access to the server, registered students are able to save and access personal files on the server.
Another way to log on to the server is as a registered staff member:
Login name: private
Password: private
In addition to general access to the server, registered staff members are able to save and access personal files on the server. Also, registered staff members have full access to all student folders.
Please read the following for complete information on how to log on.
If you are a staff member and do not have a folder on the server, please contact Mr. Durkin. If one ever has any difficulty logging onto the server, please contact Mr. Durkin.
Student
To log on as a student, merely use a personal PSD/Tavelli student identification number as the login name. The password for a student account is shared with the appropriate student by Mr. Durkin. If a password is ever forgotten, please contact Mr. Durkin. The following are one-time directions for creating a personal server space for an individual student.
Students must first be made registered users and members of an appropriate group (STUDENT) in AppleShare Admin. on your site's server before similar directions would work at your site. In addition, keep in mind that a Student Work folder and within that all folders A through Z exist on the Tavelli server in which students (or BTC/staff) create their personal root folder.
Large numbers of students at one site may be initially registered and assigned to a group in AppleShare Admin by Mr. Buchanan and/or those in his department upon request. Mr. Buchanan registered all 2nd- through 6th-grade students at Tavelli in the fall of '97.
Once such a large group of students are added, subsequent small groups and new students may be easily registered manually by the site Building Technology Coordinator using AppleShare Admin on the server. Mr. Durkin added the first graders manually and does so each year. A new student is registered with their PSD identification number as the login name and month and date of birth as initial password. Each user is also made a member of the STUDENT group. If you have questions regarding this, please contact the district folks or Mr. Durkin.
If you would like further information regarding this process and how it is handled at Tavelli, please e-mail Mr. Durkin at sdurkin@psd.k12.co.us. He has student handouts, instructions with graphics on how to set up new users, and lab posters to share to server as ideas to apply at your site.
Creating a Personal Folder on the Tavelli Server (student version)
Note: The following directions only work with ONE student at a time with security raised. I typically do this myself a class list at a time. Each year I add the incoming first graders.
If a connection to the server already exists on the desktop, disconnect it by dragging the icon(s) to the trash. A connection already exists whenever one or more of the following three icons are present on the desktop below the hard drive icon: Tavelli Server, World Book CD, and HyperStudio CD.
Again, these directions only work for ONE student/user at a time. A lab full of students following these directions at the same time run the risk of becoming confused as to which "untitled" folder belongs to which person.
Press return after you type your name.
Change User/Group name from STUDENT to TEACHER.
Click in the box by "Can't be moved, renamed or deleted."
Close the window.
Disconnect from the sever.
You should now have a personal folder in which to save all your work. You may save files and also create other folders inside. This folder may be accessed by you from any networked computer in PSD. All registered Tavelli staff members have full access to your student folder.
To access your area on the server in the future, simply log on to the Tavelli Server using your login name (your student i.d.) and password, go to the Student Work folder, go to the appropriate A-Z folder, and open your personal folder.
Path: Server | Student Work | A-Z folder | Last, First
For example, Server | Student Work | R | Ruiz, Jana
Using Your Personal Server Folder
Each teacher and many other staff members have personal space on the Tavelli server. If you are a Tavelli staff member, do not have a space on the server, and would like to have such a space, please contact Mr. Durkin. Below is a description of what this particular server space entails and how to make use of it. All teachers have the privilege to view the contents of any student folder.
To access your personal folder on the Tavelli server, log on to the server using your login name and password. If you'd ever like a review of login and password information, please contact Mr. Durkin.
Directions for logging on to the Tavelli Server
To disconnect from such connections, drag the each of the icons into the trash can. (Click and hold on the icon and drag it to the trash until the trash can turns dark - then let up on the mouse.)
There is a folder called "Staff" on the Tavelli Server. It that folder there is a list of staff folders in alphabetical order by last name. There is also a copy of the DMC Catalog in the staff folder. Open the Tavelli server and open the Staff folder.
Inside each folder are three general folders: Public, Private, and Drop Folder.
Private (only you have access to this folder)
A place to store back-up copies of important files that are on your classroom computer's hard drive.
Public (any Tavelli Server user may view files in this folder)
A good place to keep files you'd like to share with others at Tavelli. Other users have the ability view the contents of this folder and make copies of any file.
Drop Folder (other users may only see the outside of the folder, and may only "place" files in it)
A place where students and others can "leave" you files.
Please remember: Always disconnect your own connection to the Tavelli server after you are finished. To disconnect, take the tiger and drag it to the trash. Among other things, this will prevent subsequent users from accessing your private area on the server.
To disconnect from the server, simply drag all the server-related icons on the desktop into the trash can. If you ever log in with your personal identification information, it is good practice to log off immediately after you are finished working on the server. New users cannot log in if the server icon is already on the desktop. Pre-existing Tavelli server connections must be trashed before logging on.
There are several benefits to saving student work on the server. There is more space available than on a single floppy disk. Freedom from a floppy disk allows for greater flexibility in use of computers at Tavelli. Due to the fact that the server is backed up on tape every week, student work is more secure. Files on a central server are easier for a teacher to review than if the same files were scattered over 20 or more floppies. Server space also allows for easy transition of student work from year-to-year.
Students are allowed to save work in her or his personal folder on the server.
For example, Server | Student Work | B | Butler, Lisa
The staff folders on the Tavelli server allow staff members to share files among other users. It also provides a place for students and others to share files with you. In addition, it provides staff members a place to "backup" important documents and other files. The Tavelli server is automatically backed up every week. So when your disk fails, the hard drive on your computer fails, and even the Tavelli server fails, you will still have a copy on the server backup tape (if you previously put a copy on the Tavelli server).
Staff members are allowed to save work in her or his personal folder on the server. The path to a staff member's folder is: Server | Staff | [Last Name].
For example, Server | Staff | Deakin
Students mostly share their work with others via their personal web site. Some students have taken the time to create (with my assistance) public and drop folders similar to the structure found in the staff folder on the server. If you would like help with this, please contact Mr. Durkin. Students should be aware that any staff member may view all contents of any student folder.
Staff
You may use your personal Public Folder on the Tavelli server to share work with others at Tavelli. Simply place a copy of any desired file in your Public Folder and direct others to it. Any user may view and copy the contents of your Public Folder. Of course, others may share work with you by leaving files in your Drop Folder.
The Tavelli server allows remote access to registered users. Currently, the Tavelli server will only accept remote access (from a non-PSD site) from other Macintosh computers.
Reservations for the video feed on Channels 11 & 13, the TV/VCR cart, video cameras, the digital camera, the Mac laptop and other media are made on-line in the Reservations folder that is inside the Staff folder.
Steps to Making Reservations On-line
Repeat steps #2 through #4 to make other reservations.
As of spring of 2000, AppleTalk from building to building in PSD is no longer available. Instead, users are encouraged to use e-mail attachments or the public exchange folder on the SSC server. To access the SSC server, please contact Mr. Durkin for directions/mini-lesson.
Due to networking, there are many printing options at Tavelli. Please contact Mr. Durkin for the suggestions on best practices regarding your unique situation.
To print on a Mac at Tavelli, one must use a printer that is directly connected to the computer (standalone) or use a printer on the Tavelli network. A certain printer is specified by going to Chooser under the Apple menu on the desktop. Along with AppleShare, printer driver software is identified under Chooser. If you ever find that your Mac is lacking a particular printer driver, please contact me. (For instance, if you do not have HP 850c printer driver software on your computer, it is not possible to print to that type of color printer from that computer.)
It is necessary to identify both the type of printer and its exact location when printing on the network.
The following are the types and names of some of the printers at Tavelli:
Apple ImageWriters
HP DeskWriters
HP LaserJet
The Macintosh G3, G4 and older Macintosh PPC's easily read and translate DOS disks and files. ClarisWorks 4.0 on a Macintosh is able to convert a Macintosh file into DOS and other PC formats onto a DOS-formatted floppy disk that can be taken home. Of course, the subsequently updated DOS disk and files can then later be reintroduced to a Macintosh environment. Students wishing to convert files in this way should contact Mr. Durkin for simple training on this matter.
Another way to deal with the PC at home and Mac at school issue is to use e-mail (that is, if you have a PC with internet access at home) to send data back and forth between the machines within the body of a text message. For example, copy and paste the contents of a report that you have written in ClarisWorks on a Mac at school into an e-mail message to yourself. Once at home, connect to your alpha account and bring up the message in PINE, Simeon, mail in UNIX, or whatever e-mail reader you have at home. (The telnet address of alpha is
Below is another brief note about converting files:
Converting a Mac file to a PC (DOS) file
Converting a PC (DOS) file to a Mac file
One of the methods above should work. I'm sure someone has a better idea/solution. If you have an ethernet-ready late model PC to donate, that would be great! Please contact me at sdurkin@psd.k12.co.us.
Changing the Appearance of Icons
Change those drab folder and file icons to others of your choice. A collection of icons is stored in the Tiger Tech folder on the Tavelli server. Many more icons may be downloaded off the web and elsewhere. Below are the directions for changing an icon.
The file or folder icon should now be updated.
Note: If the icon you are trying to change is at a high level on the server, you may need to temporarily adjust the Sharing settings for the corresponding file or folder. If you need assistance with doing this, please contact Mr. Durkin.
A small program called Desktop Textures and some graphic files allow you to change the appearance of the background of the desktop. It is a pretty straightforward process. Just open the desired desktop texture file(s). The appropriate program and files can be made available to your machine upon request to Mr. Durkin. Newer Mac OS offer pictures in addition to patterns.
Screen Savers
Unfortunately, the older security program BDW Protector prohibits the use of any other screen saver than the one that comes with it. If you have a Mac without BDW Protector and would like a free screen saver, please contact Mr. Durkin. A screen saver should be on every computer.
There will be more to come. Your input is welcome! Please send Mr. Durkin ideas for future sections. Hopefully, more documentation will appear pertaining to information already posted as well as digital camera use, Graphic Converter, scanning/Optical Character Recognition, and others.
Also check out the Tiger Tech folder on the Tavelli Server.

Disconnecting from the Server
The path to a student's folder is: Server | Student Work | A-Z folder | [Student's Last Name, Student's First Name].
Follow these steps to identify a networked printer:
For example, the window below shows a selection of ImageWriter AppleTalk printer driver to use with the ImageWriter in the 2nd grade study.
