In the process of dividing governmental powers the framers of the Constitution dealt with the issue of states' rights and powers. Concern over the separation of powers between the federal government and the states is a contentious issue, however, and it continues to divide both politicians and citizens.

The purpose of government in the United States is to bring order to the system of interactions between groups, providing order and security to the people and to protect the basic rights of the citizens.
